The Pontiac Theater once stood on Broadway between Main and Woodruff Streets where there is now (could you have guessed it?) a parking lot. This time though, bureaucrats were not the culprit. In 1979, the Pontiac was destroyed by a fire that took five days to extinguish. When I was a kid, it's 1200 seats were often full; but the 1970s were tougher times, and a capacity crowd was a rare event. An added insult was the damage wrought to the marquee by a poorly piloted truck. The movie was a Disney product entitled "Bears and I" (no room for the "S"), which one reviewer characterized as "a god-awful adaptation...of a really good book."
