Waterhole #3 (1977)

Opened by Bill Grogan in 1971 diagonally across the street from Little Joe's, the Waterhole #3 was the antithesis of everything that Little Joe's stood for; and it catered to the very clientele -- the long-haired rabble -- that Little Joe's shunned. By the time I made this photograph in 1977, the Waterhole had come under the ownership of a young woman named Fialla "Fi" Gamsu; and its popularity had escalated. I wondered sometimes if Little Joe Gladd wasn't a bit miffed that the upstart establishment across the street -- with its rough, stone in interior and its hirsute patrons -- had become so successful. I never asked him, and it may be he was actually pleased that there was a place nearby for the folks that he sometimes turned away in distaste. The irony is that Little Joe's is gone -- as are all the other bars in this series of photographs except for the Waterhole, which is the only business pictured in this presentation that still is what it was thirty years ago.
