Okay, he's not really pied, and he is not charming rats; but he is a charmer, and he is being followed. For three days in July, 1976, there was dancing in the streets of Saranac Lake. The Elaine Summers Dance Company came to our town from New York City, courtesy of the video department at the Lake Placid School of Art. From 2 to 4 p.m. on each of these days, the Company -- joined by any and all who wished to participate -- made their way down Broadway and Main Street to Riverside Park, turning Saranac Lake's central arteries into a stage and all the attendant infrastructure -- from bridges and buildings to lamp posts and trash cans -- into their props. In the background is the Hotel Berkeley. Built around 1876, it stood at the very center of the village, surviving at least one other major fire before being destroyed by a blaze on the frigid night of January 10, 1981.
