The Madonna of Little Joe's (1976)

Little Joe's Cocktail Lounge was the quintessential Saranac Lake tavern. It was located at 48 (now 57) Main Street. Joe Gladd operated the place with his brother, Gene. This was probably the only bar to in town to be the subject of a bomb scare. On January 7, 1976, a 26-year-old man called the police claiming that he had just planted a bomb in Little Joe's; but there was no bomb -- in fact, the man hadn't even been in Little Joe's; and the authorities eventually turned him over to his uncle, who took him up to Ogdensburg. The night I captured in this image, Gene was tending to the crowd of two. The camera was tripod mounted and the exposure very long, so that his movements behind the bar where rendered as ghostly blurs. See if you can find the one that is the Madonna.
