David Woodward: Artist/Blacksmith; Owner of Train Brook Forge

David grew up at White Pine Camp in Paul Smiths, NY, where his father was a retired Navy Commander and professor at Paul Smiths College. He earned a degree in surveying/forestry from Paul Smiths College and worked in the building trades for many years. In 1978, he studied blacksmithing in New Hampshire, and in 1986 established his own business as Train Brook Forge in Paul Smiths. (Actually, the Forge is in Easy Street, a bedroom community one mile east of Paul Smiths).

Besides metalwork, David is a master in wood crafts (carving, furniture making), leather work, and tailoring. He has studied 18th century history in depth and has won international acclaim for his reproduction 18th century portmanteaux (travel trunks) and hearth ware. Also, he has achieved a 4th degree black belt in the martial art Tang Soo Do.
