The Lawn Chair Ladies march into town. (4th place, Competition)

Thirteen years ago they participated in the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival parade as the Adirondack Wild Women. They carried lawn chairs, with which they did a dance routine at intervals in their march through the town. No one seemed to be able to remember Adirondack Wild Women. Everyone simply called them the Lawn Chair Ladies; and, after a couple of years, they adopted that as their official name. They started out as a small group. Now they number thirty-six, their self-imposed limit (there’s a waiting list to join); and they long ago became the highlight of Carnival’s signature event. Their garb and routine each year reflect the Carnival theme, which, for 2008, is Hooray for Hollywood – harkening to the time when many famous entertainers came here for their health or to perform for those who were convalescing, and to when Saranac Lake was a location for numerous silent films.
